I am Yue Yin, a third-year PhD student in Linguistics at The Ohio State University, co-advised by Dr. Micha Elsner and Dr. Becca Morley. I think of myself as an experimental and computational phonologist: I study how sound systems work, and how learners — human and machine — come to acquire them.
My work combines laboratory experiments, computational modeling, and fieldwork.
- In the lab, I use (1) artificial language learning experiments to explore learning biases of human beings in phonological learning; (2) both production and perception experiments to tap into the mechanisms of sound variation and change.
- On the computational side, I build and diagnose models of phonological learning, and probe how self-supervised speech models represent sounds.
- I have done fieldwork on Guangshui Mandarin, Long'an Zhuang, and Narua (Mosuo), where I study tones, vowel length contrast, as well as sound change.
